Case study

International payments to 150 countries

A UK international payments provider operating since 2000: transfers in 40 currencies to over 150 countries, transactions the size of a house purchase abroad. The company holds an electronic money institution licence under the UK regulator.

Context

The screens on which clients ordered transfers ran on an outdated technology: they looked a decade old, and every new feature was expensive and risky, because hardly anyone could still develop them. The company wanted a new interface but could not touch what worked underneath: in payments the customer’s money physically passes through the system, and a transfer that went out twice or a rate locked a second too late means an immediate call from the customer and an entry in the incident register.

What I built

As part of the SDK Global Ltd team I wrote a new version of the client interface on a modern technology, keeping the existing logic and the server behind it. The client got new screens, and everything behind them that calculates and settles transfers stayed as it was.

Client dashboard, new version

  • Every transfer in one place: ordered, on its way, delivered, across 40 currencies.
  • The rate and the amount that will reach the recipient, shown before the transfer is approved.
  • The stage of every transfer live, without calling the helpline.

The client’s name and the technical details stay under a non-disclosure agreement.

Outcome

The client got a modern, clear interface on which they run all their transfers from one screen: they see the rate and the amount the recipient will get before approving the order, and then the stage of the transfer without calling the helpline. “Where is my transfer?” has an answer on screen before the client reaches for the phone. The company gained an interface on a supported technology that today’s developer market can work with: new features arrive faster and cheaper, while everything that calculates and settles transfers carries on unchanged and free of the risk a rebuild would bring.
