Case study

A legal document generator driven by a form

A system where the user fills in a short form and a finished legal document comes out, ready to download on the spot. I built it as a self-contained part and connected it to the client's existing website, which another company maintains.

Context

Most legal documents repeat the same layout and differ in the parties’ details, amounts and dates. For swapping those few fields a client pays a lawyer as for a full service and waits days for the document. Here they get the same document on the spot, automatically, for a fraction of that fee.

What I built

Form and document

  • A separate form for each document type, with fields described in clear language.
  • Validation of the entered data while the form is being filled in.
  • Online payment and the finished document ready to download as soon as the form is complete.

Templates

  • Templates in one place, maintained by the lawyer.
  • A clause corrected once appears in every document from then on.

Outcome

The client gets a vetted legal document on the spot, with no contact with a lawyer and for a fraction of the fee, for the everyday matters that would end in the same document anyway. The lawyer no longer swaps dates and names in templates and has time for the harder cases, the ones the client pays the full rate for. I cannot share more under the non-disclosure agreement.

Facing something similar? Describe it and I will tell you whether I can help.

You do not need a specification. Describe how the work looks today and what should change. We will write the scope together.

A few sentences is enough.
